- Read all steps before beginning the repair.
Recommended Tools
- 10mm socket
- Phillips screwdriver
- Small ratchet or offset wrench
- Plastic trim pry tool
- Mini flat-blade screwdriver
- Flexible screwdriver (optional)
- Pick tool
- Brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1 — Panel Removal
- Remove the two screws behind the hood release lever.
- Pull the hood release lever forward and downward.
- Remove the side trim panel using a plastic pry tool.
- Pull the center console side cover straight outward.
Disconnect the electrical connectors behind the panel by pressing the release tab and pulling gently. Do not pull on the wires.
Step 2 — Front Foot Duct Vent Removal
- Locate the vent beneath the dashboard.
- Remove the two mounting screws.
- Compress the vent slightly and slide it downward.
Access to the screws is tight. A flexible screwdriver or offset wrench may help.
Step 3 — Blend Door Motor Removal
- Remove the two screws securing the blend door motor.
- Pull the motor downward and outward.
- Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab.
Step 4 — Understanding the Failure
The factory blend door hub is plastic and commonly cracks or strips. When this happens, the blend door cannot rotate between hot and cold positions.
Dealership repair requires replacing the entire heater box, which involves removing the dashboard and can cost thousands of dollars.
The Renegade Solutions repair kit permanently fixes the stripped interface.
Step 5 — Parts Cleaning
- Break a cotton ball into several pieces.
- Use tweezers to remove debris from the bore.
- Clean using brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol.
- Allow parts to dry completely.
Do not use acetone or harsh solvents that may damage plastic.
Step 6 — Activator Application
- Apply activator using a cotton swab.
- Coat the inside of the bore and the insert shaft.
- Allow activator to cure for at least 5 minutes.
Apply adhesive within 15–20 minutes of activator application.
Step 7 — Gear Installation
- Open the blend door motor housing by releasing the four tabs.
- Remove the factory gear.
- Install the Renegade Solutions replacement gear.
- Apply the included plastic-safe grease to gear teeth and hubs.
Reassemble the motor housing once greased.
Step 8 — Heater Box Grease Application
Apply grease around the heater door bore to prevent adhesive from bonding to the heater box housing.
Step 9 — Insert Installation
- Apply approximately 0.3 ml of adhesive inside the bore.
- Spread adhesive evenly.
- Apply adhesive to the insert shaft.
- Insert fully into the heater door bore.
Allow adhesive to cure for 24–48 hours.
Step 10 — Motor Installation
- Reconnect the blend door motor.
- Align the motor shaft with the insert.
- Install mounting screws.
Do not overtighten screws.
Step 11 — Vent Reinstallation
- Reinstall the foot duct vent.
- Start screws by hand before tightening.
Step 12 — Panel Reassembly
- Reconnect electrical connectors.
- Reinstall trim panels.
- Secure the hood release lever.
- Snap all interior panels back into place.
Final Check
After reassembly, test the heater system. The vehicle computer will automatically recalibrate the blend door position during normal operation.
